What is a Blog?

Before becoming a professional blogger, we need to know the answer to this question, what is a blog.

A blog is a website that has a specific purpose of sharing information by a writer or group of writers.

You must have seen tons of websites that may be selling t-shirts, shoes, jackets, etc. They have a specific purpose of selling the product via their online store. This also applies to the blog but here product is replaced by content. On the blog, people do not order and buy content but they consume the information in it.

Types of blogs are huge but there are two purposes of a blog:

  • Personal
  • Business

After analysing thousands of blogs we can say: A blog is a dynamic website (mostly) in which informative content is posted regularly. These posts are displayed according to the categorisation for better understanding for the users. Designing and displaying the post on the blog entirely depends on the creative imagination of the blog owner.

What Does A Blogger Do?

A blogger has a definite goal, their job for the blog is to write content, edit it, publish it and promote it. Being a professional blogger you have to perform several important works.

1. Write Content

Writing content for a blog is the primary job of a blogger. Without content, a blog is nothing more than a lifeless body without a soul. The main purpose of the content is to provide valuable information to its reader.

The content written by the blogger should be easy to read as well as free because it becomes the foundation of an invisible bond between a blogger and the reader. By doing this the reader will become your permanent reader and admirer.

While writing the content for your blog post make sure that you have a very strong grip over the chosen topic. Being a professional blogger you need to always write a wide range of topics but not outside of your niche. For beginners, it will be a daunting task to write content but to ease this process there are several writing apps available online that can make your task easier.

When you write content for your blog, there are many tasks in your bucket such as:

  • Finding an awesome topic.
  • Analysis of competitors’ post.
  • Keyword analysis for the topic using SEO tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, Ubersuggest, etc.
  • Outline the topic.
  • Taking down the notes.
  • Writing the whole content.
  • Editing the draft of the final content.
  • Adding references, images, videos, links, etc.
  • Optimise the post for SEO ranking.

As you can see from the above list that blog content writing is not limited to just putting it on the page but it is much more than that.

2. Affiliate Product Recommendations

Other than sharing informative content, earning from the blog is the second important goal for any blogger. Affiliate marketing is the most popularly used method to earn money from the blog. In this method, bloggers recommend the affiliate product within the written content.

Whenever a visitor clicks on the links and buys the recommended product, the blogger gets a small commission from it. As a buyer, you do not need to worry as you don’t have to pay a single penny to the blogger. They get their commission from the product/service company which they recommend. It is a win-win situation for everybody. You as a purchaser get the maximum discount (most important recommendation from an expert blogger), a blogger gets its commission for recommendation and affiliate companies get a customer.

In affiliate marketing, bloggers are not required to create products, keep inventory, etc. It is all about how well you recommend a product/service by putting all the positive and negative aspects in front of the users through your review.

Affiliate earnings from the product can be one time as well as recurring, it will depend on the type of affiliate product/service that you will recommend and promote.

Relevancy is the key in your affiliate marketing because it will be weird to promote car parts in your food blog. This will end up in losing your readership. To grow and maintain the traffic on the blog a blogger has to stick with the relevance of the product in the content. Instead of direct flat pitching of the product, be creative and use contextual linking techniques.

3. Self Promotion

To generate traffic to a blog a blogger needs to promote it on various mediums. As a professional blogger, you give your sweat and blood to write content, design and develop a full blog. Now it is time to self-promote to get the desired result.

You don’t need to have a marketing team or build a huge campaign. A right strategy is the foundation of achieving anything. Bloggers also need to follow the right strategy to promote their blogs.

3.a Promotion it through SEO

For promoting a website on the internet SEO (search engine optimization) is a must. Almost 93% of the global market share is captured by Google. People instead of typing the full URL on the browser to go to a specific website rather choose to type search queries on Google. These search queries are called keywords, so the Keywords become the building block for SEO.

While promoting your blog via search engine optimization techniques you should always do keyword research. For keyword research, you can use SEO tools like Semrush, Ahrefs, Ubersuggest, etc. After finalising the keywords with their mapped URL start building high-quality links for your blog and its posts.

3.b Promotion through Content Marketing

Promotion through content marketing gives your blog long term sustainable results. Content marketing is one of the best ways to build authority on the website. Blog submission, web 2.0 submission, article submission, and guest posting are some of the content marketing techniques.

While sharing the content on someone’s blog always focus on the relevancy and niche. Publishing 100 content on general websites and publishing 5 content on niche websites is always equal. Smart work here is important to save your time and efforts.

3.c Promote it on Social Media

Social media has the potential to make your post viral in no time. Popular social media platforms like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, LinkedIn, etc are the perfect place to promote your blog. Use social media platforms to create your community where you can promote your blog posts.

If your post has that X factor to go viral then it will go viral through social media in no time.

For easy sharing on social media, your blog must have social sharing buttons, widgets, and social media icons buttons.

3.d Build a Brand

Branding is very crucial these days. As a blogger, you can create two types of brand names for your blog. One can be your blog name and the other you can come up with yourself as a band name. Both of them have the same strategy to build a brand name. Always mention your brand name while promoting it on any medium, because it will leave an impression in the mind of any internet user.

A short and memorable name should always be used when you are building your brand name. Here comes the most important work of choosing the name of the blog. Although I have explained everything in detail in my How to Start a Blog, still you have to open the horses of your mind and take your creativity to the extreme.

4. Sell Products

When your blog gets huge traffic, other than blogging you can also sell your product. There are two types of products you can sell on your blog.

  • Physical and
  • Digital

Physical products always need to maintain inventory and require lots of stuff to do. But it does not mean you can not sell the physical product, you are welcome to sell physical products through your blog. Selling physical products isn’t my cup of tea so I won’t write about it any further.

Digital stuff is my kind of thing and I can write on and on about these things. Most bloggers choose to sell digital products as they are easy to create. The best digital for any blogger is an e-book. Other than the e-book one can also sell a digital course.

If worked properly on the blog a blogger can earn handsome money through digital products.

What Will You Get As A Blogger?

All the bloggers around the world have different reasons for blogging. But being a professional blogger (except company blogger aka content marketer) there are many leverages that they enjoy:

  • Creative freedom
  • Time freedom
  • Financial freedom
